      When free of duties related to farming in the largely agrarian communities of the north, people would use whatever natural resources they had around them to create items for use in daily life, changing the designs they used through time as necessary. Creativity and design have added value to basketry, which can both serve practical purposes and be souvenirs or decorative items.
